Ongata Rongai Residents Drowned After Fatima South Bridge Collapsed

Seven residents of Ongata Rongai estate, Kajiado County, perished in flood waters on Friday after a bridge they were walking over collapsed.

The Fatima South Bridge is believed to have crashed into River Kandisi due to structural failures that were amplified by the flash floods.

11 people who were on the bridge when it collapsed were yet to be rescued from the raging waters.

Here is a video that was shared by one Patrick Gituku on the evening before the bridge collapsed.

Confirming the report, County Commissioner David Kipkemei told reporters that the victims had hung onto the crashing bridge before they gave up.

"They had been crossing the river along Fatima Road when it burst suddenly.

"Seven people who were with them managed to swim across the water," he explained.

The area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Mwathi Pere, however, conveyed that rescue parties were yet to be deployed.

"It is risky to search for the bodies at the moment," he told reporters, adding that a number of houses had been swept away in the Ole Kasasi area.

Kajiado West sub-county also experienced the death of three people after a landslide that occurred on Thursday.
