Miguna Miguna's Citizenship Should Be Sorted Before He Becomes Deputy Governor- Beatrice Elachi

Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi has advised Miguna Miguna to first sort his citizenship before thinking of becoming the next deputy governor.

Speaking during an interview on Thursday morning, the county speaker maintained that the troubled lawyer is Canadian and this will hamper his chances of working for the county.

"I would tell Miguna to first clear his issues with the Kenyan gov’t. He is Canadian. That procedure can take us 3-4 months.

"The Governor has given us a nominee. We will follow the law. The constitution is clear that a Deputy Governor needs to be a Kenyan citizen," she noted, hinting that the process might be too complicated.

"You need 90 votes and above to be the Deputy Governor," she added.

Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwalwe, however, read from a different script, affirming that the lawyer is a legitimate Kenyan.

"Miguna’s nationality is not in question. What is in question is a travel document. A passport, or lack of it, does not override the fact that Miguna was born in Kenya," he remarked in a separate interview.

Khalwale further predicted that the former Raila Odinga's aide will declare he is qualified but might lay down some rules for Sonko.

"Knowing Miguna, he will say he is qualified, then he will put his demands on the table before taking up the Deputy Governor job," he reiterated.

On Thursday morning, renowned lawyer Cliff Ombeta confirmed he had handed Miguna's nomination to Elachi and urged a speedy process.

"What Miguna has said about Sonko is his opinion. He is considering that position.

"He should be allowed back into the country to take up that position once he is vetted and goes through," stated Ombeta.
