CBD Roads to Be Recarpeted

All streets within the Nairobi CBD are set to be recarpeted after the rains are over.

This is according to Nairobi County Executive Committee for Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Mohammed Dagane, who on Wednesday revealed that funds for the exercise have been already been allocated.

“There was no much maintenance done for the last 20 years… we have a joint working program with the National Government which will see all these roads recarpeted beginning with the CBD," he was quoted by Capital News.

He further urged city residents to be patient as the rains have hampered planned improvements on the said roads.

Recarpeting will also be done on several other roads including; Enterprise, Mogadishu, Juja and Lunga Lunga among others.

44 other road projects that had stopped under the previous government will also be revived after contractors were paid.

According to Dagane, a total of Ksh600 million has been paid to the contractors in the last three months for construction of stalled roads.

The rains experienced in the city have left many roads in a deplorable state and governor Mike Sonko has come under heavy criticism for failing to take charge.

Embarrassing photos of potholes in the CBD have been shared widely as Sonko's administration was put under the microscope.

The governor claimed a chunk of Ksh3.7 billion set aside for city roads was diverted during Evans Kidero's tenure, hence the deplorable state of the same.

A report by audit firm KPMG said the monies, factored in the 2015/16 budget, were spent on legal fees in the previous regime.

Kidero, however, dismissed the claims as 'absolute nonsense' and asked Sonko to resign 'if the job is too tough for him'.
