3 Students Drown in Laikipia, Sossion Denies Blame

Three students died after they drowned at a dam in Laikipia County.

The three were form two students at Thiru Secondary School and had been sent home following the ongoing teachers strike, when they decided to cool off at the nearby dam.

Tuesday morning saw the parents of the three students arrive at the school, asking about their children's whereabouts.

Investigations by the school's administration revealed that the students were seen heading towards the dam.

Their clothes and shoes were found at the shores of the dam that had formed from a quarry. Local divers spent hours searching for their bodies.

Speaking to Citizen TV, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion rubbished claims that the teachers were partly to blame, since the students went for the swim after they were told to go home because of the strike.

Sossion said they had told parents countrywide to keep their students at home since no learning would happen in schools until their demands are met.

He reiterated that the strike would continue until the 50-60 per cent salary increment awarded by the court was implemented.

The nationwide strike by teachers in public schools entered its second week since the re-opening of schools for the third term.
