300 Prostitutes Arrested and Tested

Around 300 prostitutes were arrested by Police in brothels and in the streets of Kisii town and tested for HIV.

The commercial sex workers were nabbed on Thursday following records at the County's health department that indicated that most of them could have been infected with HIV.

According to the authorities that oversaw the operation, those who will test positive will be arraigned in court and charged for spreading the disease.

Kisii County Chief Officer Administration Patrick Lumumba, who led the operation was surprised at how young some of the suspects were.

"It is unfortunate that girls below the age of 15 are engaging in prostitution. We are losing a generation because of this social vice," the Standard quoted Mr Lumumba.

Prostitution remains illegal in Kenya and anyone found indulging in the business is guilty of a felony.
