Uhuru Holds Talks With Cyril Ramaphosa in Canada

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday held extensive talks with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Quebec, Canada.

The talks focussed on trade and bilateral relations in a number of areas including immigration where notable improvements have been recently realized.

On trade, the two leaders agreed to hold an investment conference in Nairobi in the last quarter of the year that will focus on promoting intra-African trade and, particularly, spurring investment in Kenya and South Africa.

It was also agreed that President Kenyatta would make a state visit to South Africa as soon as possible with the date to be advised through diplomatic channels.

Uhuru was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma and Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategy and Policy Ruth Kagia.

In addition, Uhuru met Senegal President Macky Sall, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holnnes and World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva.

The President sought to have the World Bank authorize emergency funds to facilitate the repair of roads in Nairobi following the recent floods.

He further discussed with Georgieva the need to align funding from the bank with his own big four agenda.

In his meeting with Sall, it was agreed that Kenya would open its first embassy in Francophone Africa, in Dakar within four months.

“The AfCFTA we agreed in Kigali has to be supported by bilateral actions. And so we are reaching out to Senegal to expand our trade frontiers and boost people-to-people relations necessary for trade,” he stated.

He discussed partnerships in air travel, athletics, culture and tourism with Jamaica's Holnnes.
