Mombasa Woman Representative Asha Hussein Released on Bail

Mombasa Chief Magistrate Julius Nang'ea on Monday granted a bail application to Mombasa Woman Representative Asha Hussein and ordered her release from custody.

The Woman Rep denied charges of assault against a county official who claims to have been hospitalised following the encounter with the Member of Parliament (MP).

Ms Mayasa Hassan, a traffic marshall, told the court that she was assaulted by the MP on May 11, 2018, at Majengo area, Mvita sub-county.

Mayasa told the court that she was caused bodily harm that led to her hospitalisation at Jocham Hospital.

Through her lawyer Mr Paul Buti, Hussein denied the accusations while pleading with the court to be lenient due to her status as a public officer.

She was granted her plea and released on a bond of Ksh100,000 or a bail amount of Ksh50,000 which she opted for.

Four witnesses, including the victim, are lined up to testify against the first-term woman rep when the case is heard.

The case will be mentioned on June 28.

Hussein made the news recently when she asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to marry a second wife, citing the Marriage Bill that was signed to law in 2014.

"Many women support the idea of legalising polygamy in the country but Uhuru should take the challenge by marrying a second wife and introduce her in the press for all of us to see.

"We have heard about the polygamy debate. But a majority of women in the country oppose it. Therefore, we cannot impose it on people," she reasoned at the time.
