KEMRI Doctor Shot Dead in World Cup Night Out

An attack at a popular joint in Kisumu where football fans were watching a World Cup match left one man hospitalised with gunshot injuries while a medic at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) died.

Prof Peter Kasumba died on Sunday morning at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu in the Intensive Care Unit where had been admitted after the Friday night attack.

Prof Kasumba was the Principal Medical research scientist at KEMRI Kisumu, located on the Kisumu-Busia highway.

Kisumu West OCPD Wilston Mwakio confirmed the incident stating that the attackers opened fire at Rainbow Bar and Restaurant in Tieng’re shooting the professor in the back and another football fan in the leg.

Mr Mwakio said a motorcycle used to facilitate the attack had been impounded by the police who are still in the search for the perpetrators.

“They were four attackers on a motorbike. They injured two of the fans and unfortunately the hospital has confirmed that the doctor succumbed to the injuries this (Sunday) morning. We are on the search for the criminals since we have recovered items that will be a lead to finding them.” Mr Mwakio told Kenyans.co.ke.

Witnesses told the media that the gang took the diseased out of the joint claiming they had been looking for him for a while before shooting him near his car that had been parking outside.

Until his death, Prof Kasumba was keen on the push for the modernization of Laboratory Science practices as a way of tackling environmental diseases.

He had earlier raised concern over lack of modern equipment that can help identify and tackle diseases associated with heavy metals.

The victim who was shot in the leg is, on the other hand, receiving treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The thugs who were armed with AK47 rifles took away Sh2000 and a Television set from the entertainment facility.
