Mystery of House Girl in Ksh630 Million Scandal

Detectives are working around the clock to crack the puzzle of a house girl at the centre of a Ksh630 Million cigarette scandal.

The house girl is the alleged owner of a high-end cigarette consignment amounting to 196 million sticks that were nabbed by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials.

KRA confiscated the consignment which is packaged in 40-foot containers at the Nairobi Inland Container Depot for duty evasion.

The consignment is part of Ksh1.2 billion goods which have been impounded by detectives in the ongoing ransack against counterfeit goods.

Reports indicate that the house girl who is still at large is likely a proxy for tax evasion cartels in the country who have been costing the country billions of money annually in illegal trade practices.

According to the Nation, the consignment was imported by the house girl in 44 containers with the help of her international partners under the company Quality GS Limited.

Another consignment of 5 containers was shipped through a health service provider Xplico Insurance Company Limited whose directors include both locals and foreigners.

The cigarette consignment is further alleged to have been shipped through the international shipping company Maersk Line Kenya.

The government has reiterated its resolve to fight contraband products in the Kenyan market with tonnes of contaminated sugar nabbed in the past weeks.

The height of the contraband sugar controversy has been the alleged presence of mercury, copper and lead in sugar that has pitched Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi against his Industrialization counterpart CS Aden Mohamed.
