Nakuru Police Disperse Protests on Release of Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama

Police officers were on Sunday forced to move in and disperse a group of protesters outside Railways Police Station where Nakuru Town West Member of Parliament (MP) Samuel Arama was being held in custody.

The police were forced to act and restore calm after the protests calling for the MP's immediate release got out of hand.

MP Arama was booked at the station on Friday after being busted by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officials in a questionable land deal.

EACC officials explained that they had received a number of complaints from members of the public after the legislator acquired land belonging to the government.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji on Sunday approved EACC to charge the MP with six counts regarding his acquisition of a plot in Nakuru municipality Block6/95.

The charges are abuse of office, conspiracy to defraud, making a document without authority, uttering a document with intent to deceive, misleading an investigator and obtaining registration of land by false pretence.

"This is as a result of investigations by the EACC after a complaint from a member of the public was received in relation to the manner in which Mr Samuel Arama acquired a plot in Nakuru municipality Block6/95," a statement from the office of the DPP read in part.

He further noted that the investigations had shown that the legislator colluded with lands office workers to carry out the scheme.

"The outcome of the investigations revealed that Hon. Samuel Arama, in collusion with officers in the Nakuru lands registry unlawfully and deceitfully influenced illegal registration and issuance of a certificate of lease...to an alleged individual who has since disowned the purported sale agreement entered between the Hon. Samuel Arama and the alleged individual," the statement further outlined.

Mr Arama will be arraigned in court on Monday, June 25, 2018, to respond to the charges against him.
