Police Killed, Transport Paralyzed After Al-Shabaab Attack [PHOTOS]

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants have on Thursday killed a police officer and injured two others along the Lamu - Mombasa road.

Reports indicate that the Al-Shabaab attackers intercepted a convoy of buses, paralysing transport on Lamu-Garsen road.

During the attack in Milihoi area, Lamu county, the bandits reportedly torched a police Land Cruiser.

The militants also torched a private vehicle whose occupants fled and abandoned it amid the gunfight.

The police responded to contain the situation and a 30-minute shoot-out ensued with police turning away vehicles heading into and out of Lamu.

Photos are seen by Kenyans.co.ke show passengers stranded on the road after buses heading to Lamu from Mombasa were grounded in Mkunumbi area after the attack.

Sources indicate that the various security organs were deployed to carry a crackdown in the area to hunt down the militants.

A few months ago, media reports quoted Lamu residents alleging that over 200 suspected Al-Shabaab militants had been cited inside Boni Forest, a claim refuted by government officials.

Although Al-Shabaab militants have been taking advantage of the porous Kenya-Somali border, the ongoing military incursion in Somali involving KDF and allied AMISOM forces has greatly weakened the terror group.

This has seen the militants resolve to ambush attacks and burying Improvised Explosive Device (IED) to target security convoys - a sign of a dwindling military power.
