Jubilee MP Start Move to Impeach National Treasury CS Henry Rotich

Members of the National Assembly have all ganged up to have a Cabinet Secretary in President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration removed.

Jubilee party legislators have initiated the move aimed at kicking out CS National Treasury Henry Rotich from office.

Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa told Kenyans.co.ke that he had started collecting signatures hoping the move will be successful.

The MP disclosed that as at Tuesday afternoon, he had obtained at least 96 signatures supporting the motion.

He stated that the signatures had been drawn from across the political divide insisting MPs were keen on having the CS ejected from office.

Barasa now needs just 14 more signatures before tabling the motion for the removal of the CS in connection with the contraband Sugar imports and the controversial Ruaraka land payments.

"This is not a partisan game were are playing. The people who are signing are from different political parties and it is in the mood of the Members of Parliament to impeach the CS. We are just working on the facts that exist," the MP stated.

He insisted that the motion shall not be curtailed by politics give the move has the backing of parliamentary committee reports.

"CS Rotich is the one who authorized the payments for the Ruaraka land. The evidence is there and the money was wired to the accounts of the buyer. This man was paying for a peice of land that does not even exist.

"Even on the sugar imports, it is the gazette notice he issued that caused the huge problem and my motion is concrete. I am seeking to have as many signatures as possible before tabling the motion," stated Barasa.

Once tabled before the House, the law provides that at least one-third of the house supports the motion for a special committee to be constituted to investigate the concerns raised in the motion.

In the event the select committee substantiates the complaints against the CS, he shall have an opportunity to defend himself before the parliament approves his dismissal.

A majority of the Members of Parliament are required to have the CS impeached in a notification of the resolution to be submitted to the Head of State by the Speaker.

An ad-hoc committee probing the influx of substandard sugar into the Kenyan market had put CS Rotich on the spot over a gazette notice that saw rogue businessmen import thousands of tonnes of the sweetener, some of which was declared unfit for human consumption.
