Southend Mall on Langata Road Demolished [VIDEO]

Southend mall which is along Lang'ata road and opposite Tmall was demolished on Wednesday morning.

According to witnesses on the ground, there was a heavy police presence as the demolitions happened.

The mall was brought down as part of the ongoing demolitions of buildings on riparian land in Nairobi.

NEMA demolished the Ksh1 billion South End mall which is allegedly owned by former Bobasi MP Stephen Manoti.

The mall is built over the Mutuini-Ngong river and was blamed for flooding in Nairobi West, South C, and Lang'ata.

Area residents and environmentalists complained that the building had obstructed the flow of water, causing flooding during the rainy season.

The operation was aimed at reclaiming Nairobi River since water flowing in the river had been heavily polluted by dumping and encroachment.

The MP had in 2017 argued that he had gotten approval from the County Government adding that the five-story building was constructed away from the river.

NEMA had noted that the flow of the river was diverted for Manoti to construct the building.

The Environment Management Authority also noted that the owner had gotten approval but failed to observe the conditions given to him when he started the construction.
