SGR Deal That Landed Swazuri in Jail - EACC Reveals

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Halakhe Waqo on Saturday announced details of the land deal that saw National Lands Commission (NLC) Chair Muhammad Swazuri arrested on Saturday.

Swazuri is among senior officials at NLC and the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) set for prosecution, with Railways boss Atanas Maina also apprehended.

Waqo held a press conference at Integrity Centre revealing details of the irregular compensation paid for a piece of land in Embakasi, Nairobi.

He disclosed that KRC and NLC paid compensation to persons and entities affected by construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) for land which lies on the railway reserve in Embakasi.

It was confirmed that the land known as Railway Yard was, actually, already owned by the public.

In line with the economic crimes act, the EACC carried out investigations and submitted a report to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji.

The case is reminiscent of the raging Ruaraka land scandal in which Swazuri is also implicated in the payment of Sh1.5 Billion to acquire a 13 acre piece of land that was already owned by the public.

The DPP agreed with the agency that there was sufficient evidence to see the suspects face a litany of graft and economic crime-related charges.

They are to be arraigned in court on Monday, 13th August 2018.

Suspects who were yet to be captured were directed to present themselves at Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices.
