Kenya Police Chopper Crash-lands in Boni Forest

Several Kenya Police officers were on Wednesday afternoon involved in an accident after a chopper they were using during usual patrol made an unexpected landing in Boni forest.

According to officers involved in the routine patrol, the accident occurred around Galgal area.

The officers informed the media that the helicopter crash-landed as a result of mechanical errors.

The pilot is reported to have realised technical issues while they were approaching Holugho border.

"The pilot had to force landing to avert danger. It wasn't shot down as is being claimed," a senior Police officer told the Star on condition that he is not named.

There were no injuries reported from the incident and the number of soldiers that were on board has not been established.

This has come barely two months after the Interior ministry procured helicopters in a procurement exercise that drew the attention of parliament after it emerged the purchase had not been budgeted for.

Parliament had complained that purchase of the four helicopters acquired for at least Kshs4 Billion had been done without the involvement of the national assembly.

When receiving the choppers ordered from Italy, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i noted that the ministry had initiated a radical transformation of the police air-wing.
