400 Government Officers Cleared After Lifestyle Audit

The government on Monday revealed the fate of 400 officials who underwent the lifestyle audit ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta earlier in June.

In a statement to newsrooms, Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe disclosed that the officers had been cleared to return to work and resume their duties.

"As of today, 400 officers have been cleared to return to work and resume their duties. Due to employer/ employee confidentiality terms, communication to the officers as to the conditions of return is to be affected by the respective authorized officers," the statement read in part.

Kiraithe explained that the fresh vetting process for the first cohort of officers was about to be concluded following a circular issued by the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua commencing the process on June 4.

"Due to extenuating circumstances, the timelines for the vetting process extended beyond the anticipated period. The next cohort of officers has been identified, and will shortly receive the requisite details.

"Those who will not have been cleared to return will be processed in line with existing law, human resource guidelines and within the tenets of the Fair Administrative Action Act," he concluded.

During his Madaraka Day Speech, the Head of State directed the fresh vetting of public officers, beginning with Heads of Procurement and Accounting Units as part of the government's revitalized initiative against corruption.

Earlier on Thursday, Kinyua revealed preliminary findings of the exercise stating that at least a third of government workers had failed to account for their declared wealth.

On the hand, he noted that the majority of workers had proved their diligence and were able to account for what they own.

He further announced that the lifestyle audit would be completed within the next four weeks.
