President Uhuru Promises Lifestyle Audits for All Government Officials

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday announced that all government officials, including Deputy President William Ruto and himself, would undergo lifestyle audits as part of the renewed fight against corruption.

Speaking in Mombasa where he launched Phase One of the Dongo Kundu bypass, Uhuru reiterated his commitment to seeing graft eradicated in the country.

He declared that he would be the first to undergo a lifestyle audit followed by Ruto and all other government officials would then follow suit.

"We will conduct a lifestyle audit for all public servants beginning with myself as a step towards fighting corruption," a tweet shared by the Office of the President read shortly after he made the remarks.

DP Ruto accompanied Uhuru to the event which was also attended by leaders such as Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and former Senator Hassan Omar.

The announcement becomes the latest in a series of orders issued by President Kenyatta meant to combat graft.

After issuing a directive that saw procurement and accounting officers in all ministries, departments and government agencies step aside to allow for fresh vetting, Uhuru on Wednesday issued an executive order seeking to make procurement processes more transparent.

The order requires government entities and public institutions to publish full details of tender winners starting on July 1.

Some of the information the public will easily access includes items or services purchased, contract prices, and the particulars of the suppliers including owners, directors and beneficial ownership.

"This will enhance the highest level of public scrutiny at all units of public administration, and thereby improve the management of public resources for public good," State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu stated.
