NTSA to Blacklist Drunk Drivers in New Rules

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Monday revealed details of new rules that will be implemented using the smart driving licence.

According to NTSA Director General Francis Meja, drunk drivers caught in the offence three times will be blacklisted by the authority and the information availed to potential employers.

Besides, any drivers caught drunk and driving will be suspended from driving for a period of six months.

Each drunk-driving offence will see the drivers lose 14 points which will be reflected in their smart driving licence with NTSA planning to set up roadside arrest stations.

"We are not going to compromise because such drivers are not just a danger to themselves but also other motorists," Meja stated.

Speaking during the launch of the road safety report on the Northern Corridor, the NTSA Director revealed that they will set up eight truck stopover points for long-distance drivers.

The stopover points will help the drivers to refresh as well as get medical checkups before proceeding with their journey between Mombasa and Malaba border.

The drivers will take at least a 30-minutes break after an estimated four hours of driving of the cargo trailers.

In mid-August, the Inspector General (IG) of Police Joseph Boinnet sounded a stern warning against motorists who may try to violate traffic laws after NTSA's exit from Kenyan roads.

Speaking during a hand-over ceremony at the NTSA headquarters, IG Boinnet cautioned that that caught drunk-driving will face the full force of the law.
