Former MP David Ochieng' Claims Life in Danger Over By-election

Former Ugenya Member of Parliament (MP) David Ochieng' on Monday reported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) claiming that his life was in danger.

The former legislator accused his political rivals of planning to end his life over the upcoming by-election in the county.

In a statement recorded with the authorities, the politician claimed to have received numerous threats on his life in a bid to have him drop out of the race.

"I believe these threats emanate from the impending parliamentary by-elections in Ugenya following the High Court and Court of Appeal’s nullification of the last elections," Ochieng' explained in a text message to Citizen TV

The MP later left the DCI premises as it remained unclear whether the detectives would take up the matter.

A by-election was necessitated after the Court of Appeal upheld the nullification of Chris Karani's August 2017 election.

The Kisumu appellate court found that Karani had won the election in an unfair manner, concurring with the High Court ruling that had declared the election invalid.

"In the circumstances of this case, I too found that the nature of the malpractices was very grave thus putting the election of the applicant in doubt; elections were validly nullified," Justice Hannah Okwengu cited during the judgement of the appeal case.

Ochieng', who is the party leader and founder of the Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG), stated that the nullification would serve as a lesson for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

"Rallying call of six-piece [voting] is illegal and a way of subverting the proper right of [the] electorate who most of the time are illiterate.

"I look forward to meeting my opponent at the Supreme Court or the ground," Ochieng' stated.

Shortly after the Court of Appeal ruling, Karani expressed confidence that he would reclaim the seat at the second round of voting.

"Since August I have not found time to serve my people because of the protracted court battle. But I want to assure my people that I am ready to go back to the poll and I will win," he stated.
