Babu Owino Puts President Uhuru on Notice Over Debt

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on Monday put President Uhuru Kenyatta on notice over the soaring public debt and huge public expenditure.

In a damning letter published on Facebook, Babu claimed that Uhuru's government had borrowed nearly Ksh1 trillion in a span of 10 days.

"I write to you on behalf of the young people of our society struggling on a daily basis to make ends meet and on behalf of our mothers, stretching themselves to the limit, to ensure their families do not sleep hungry," the letter reads in part.

Babu highlighted that during Uhuru's visit to the US, the government borrowed Ksh450 billion for the construction of a six-lane highway from Mombasa to Nairobi.

"In your visit to China, your government has taken on a further Ksh380 billion debt for the construction of Phase 2A of the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha to Kisumu.

"This totals close to a trillion shillings in new debt in the span of ten days," Babu, who is also the Secretary-General of Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association stated.

A seemingly agitated Babu also lamented the recent 16 percent VAT tax that the Treasury introduced on all petroleum products.

Terming the tax as illegal, Babu added that given that Parliament is the supreme law-making organ, any attempt by the Executive to levy a tax not approved by the August House is both illegal and unconstitutional.

"Our people are already overburdened with the high cost of living. The introduction of such a tax at this time would only serve to make their lives more unbearable.

The MP further reached out to the Head of State to assent to the Finance (Amendment) Bill 2018 and save the citizens from the difficult times such a tax promises.

"On behalf of future generations, to whom we have a deep and solemn responsibility not to burden with a hopeless future, let us seek to find innovative ways to reduce public expenditure and wastage instead of raiding the pockets of ordinary wananchi (citizens)," the Embakasi East MP concluded.
