ODM MPs Give Threaten to Impeach Rotich Over New Fuel Levy

A section of ODM legislators has given Treasury CS Henry Rotich 72 hours to scrap the new fuel levy.

Led by Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch, the parliamentarians threatened to impeach Rotich if he did not comply with their demands.

We are invoking our sovereignty now under Article 1 of the constitution and saying that if you do not withdraw this directive, we will institute proceedings for your removal,” Oluoch declared in a press conference on Sunday.

The legislators who included Caleb Amisi (Saboti), and Mark Nyamitta (Uriri) declared they will rally Kenyans to countrywide peaceful demonstrations against the new fuel levy.

"When you tax fuel, you are directly hurting the majority who live below the poverty line," Nyamitta remarked.

The ultimatum came hours after the Motorists’ Association of Kenya called on its members to boycott the increased fuel prices by participating in a strike.

On Saturday, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) revised fuel prices to reflect the 16 per cent VAT as directed by Rotich.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr also called for the disciplining of the CS for defying MPs over increasing VAT on fuel.

"Will the Speaker of the National Assembly call for a special sitting to discuss the defiance by CS Treasury on VAT on fuel? Kitaeleweka(We will get to the bottom of this)" he posed on social media.

The National Assembly led by the Minority Whip Junet Mohamed amended the Finance Bill, 2018, hence delaying the implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products for two more years.

However, Rotich defied this move meant to cushion Kenyans from the high cost of living terming it as "null and void".
