Postmortem Results of David Mwai's Death Released

The postmortem results of David Mwai - the man who was found dead in police custody in Parklands under unclear circumstances - have been released.

Government pathologist Dr Sylvester Maingi, revealed that Mwai died by hanging using the nylon lining of his jacket.

“The only injuries we found were two ligature marks on the neck, one of them being from his jacket lining, it was 80cm long.

“The other ligature is of the new packaging bags such as that of the supermarket bags. This was 48cm long and had not made a mark on his neck. We can confirm that David died from a ligature to his neck from the nylon lining of his jacket," Dr Maingi stated.

He, however, noted that the results were not conclusive to establish where he was murdered or had committed suicide.

“We have not concluded on the manner of death, whether it was suicide or homicide, that is the duty of investigators.

“The autopsy findings are that David does not have injuries to suggest anybody was involved in his death,” he stated.

Police spokesman Charles Owino had earlier held that Mwai, who is suspected to have been hired to kill former Garissa County Finance Executive Idriss Mukhtar, took his own life next to the toilets used by inmates at the station.

Mwai is said to have stepped on a bucket and hanged himself using his jacket lining.

"When he came, he had a jacket, inside the jacket, there is a lining so he removed it and there was a jerrican for storing water here. He stepped on it and hanged himself," Owino stated over the weekend.

The case has been met with suspicion with Kenyans online believing there was more than met the eye in the case especially after media reports emerged indicating that the suspect in custody had agreed to give authorities crucial information on case where Garissa Governor Ali Korane is facing attempted murder charges.

Activist Boniface Mwangi, who has been vocal on the matter, explained that having been in police custody in the past, he was convinced that 'Mwai was actually murdered in the cell'.

"David Mwai was likely murdered inside a police cell. As someone who has been arrested enough times, you’re never alone in a cell.

"Belt, shoe straps are confiscated and if someone brings you food, they must taste it. So DCI this must be investigated," he tweeted.

On the other hand, Mwai's family alleged that police had offered to help Mwai escape before he committed suicide
