Weatherman Predicts More Floods From October to December

The Kenya Meteorological Information and Service Department (KMD) has warned of upcoming rains that are likely to flood parts of the country.

Announcing the October to December 2018 Short Rain Season forecast on Tuesday in Nairobi, the weatherman warned that some areas risk being exposed to floods and lightning.

KMD Director Stella Aura divulged that most parts of the country will experience enhanced rainfall in the month of November when the rains shall be at the season’s peak.

The warning comes at a time Kenya Red Cross has admitted that many predictable events such as floods and drought in the country often result in disasters and suffering.

Red Cross, during a workshop on August 29 at Boma Hotel in Nairobi stated that the impact of weather disastrous events could be reduced or avoided if weather and climate forecasts are systematically used for early action to prepare for disaster.

The workshop focused on innovative approaches on response preparedness and stakeholders deliberated on forecast based financing, data preparedness and cash transfer programming.

In preparation for these sporadic weather changes, President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration has set aside Kshs1.8 trillion under the National Climate Council under the Ministry of Environment.

According to Daily Nation, the council will be chaired by the president and has a five-year-action plan that shall run until 2023.

“The impact of climate-related disasters are felt at the household level through food insecurity, damage to property and increased prices of food and fuel and at the national level, where scarce government resources are re-allocated to address the impacts of the disaster at the expense of other programmes,” reads a document detailing the ambitious program.
