ERC Cancels Kipeda Holdings Licence Over Fuel Shortage

After reports of fuel shortage in parts of the country, the government, through the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), took a drastic action in response to the situation.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the regulator cancelled the licence of Kipeda Holdings Limited, a body corporate licensed by the Commission to carry out Import, Export and Wholesale of Petroleum Products (Except LPG).

According to ERC, Kipeda holdings is spearheading the strike against the implementation of the Value Added Tax Act 2013 and the Finance Act 2016 that came into effect on September 1, 2018.

"ERC, therefore, wishes to inform members of the public that the action by KIPEDA Holdings Limited amounts to economic sabotage and hereby cancels the licence of the said licensee pursuant to Section 85 of the Energy Act No. 12 of 2006.

"KIPEDA Holdings Limited is therefore no longer licensed to carry out import, export and wholesale of petroleum products," the statement read in part.

The regulatory body further urges all ERC licensees to strictly adhere to licence conditions.

Motorists have in the past few days experienced an acute fuel shortage in parts of the country with many of the petrol stations not having the product in stock.

Earlier on Wednesday, Petroleum Principal Secretary Andrew Kamau visited the Industrial Area fuel depot in Nairobi attempting to quell protests by petroleum distributors.

The PS attempts to calm striking petroleum distributors were met with hostility after he made a statement faulting them for the fuel shortage experienced in parts of the country.

According to the Nation, PS Kamau stated that the drivers had blocked roads to prevent the fuel from being distributed to petrol stations, a claim that the striking workers did not agree with.
