Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo Arrested Over Ksh20 Million

Former presidential candidate Cyrus Jirongo was on Tuesday arrested and held at the Muthangari Police Station.

The former Lugari legislator was taken in by police over a Ksh20 Million debt owed to businessman Brian Yongo.

The High Court had in August issued a warrant of arrest after he was found to have failed to clear the balance from a loan the businessman had given him.

The deputy registrar of the court executed the court orders through a letter dated August 7 to the Muthangari OCS.

The ex-MP was also ordered to meet the expenses of fuel and fare for the officers who would be sent to arrest him.

"These are to command you to arrest the said J/D and unless the sum of Ksh.20 million as noted in the margin, together with the executing officers' expenses fees.

"If any, to bring the said debtor before the court with all convenient speed," the letter read in part.

Mr Yongo told the court that he had loaned a total of Ksh25 Million to Jirongo.

The agreement between the two was that the debt would be settled in three instalments between 2014 and 2015.

The businessman told the court that Jirongo had only paid back Ksh5 Million and that's when he decided to move to court.
