Marsabit Woman Rep Safia Sheikh Adan Exposed for Having 3 Nationalities

A Kenyan woman Member of Parliament (MP) is in trouble after being exposed for being a citizen of 3 countries.

According to a document lodged in court on Friday, Marsabit Woman Representative Safia Sheikh Adan is alleged to owe allegiance to Kenya, the United States (US) and the Federal Republic of Ethiopia.

The files state that Safia was born in Ethiopia in January 1959 and obtained a US passport on January 5, 2012.

However, a birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births on February 13, 2012, shows that the MP was born in Moyale in 1960.

She obtained her national identification card on February 20, 1997, and a Kenyan passport on March 2, 2017.

The case launched by Yahya Mohamud Hassan, a Marsabit resident, seeks to declare the legislator’s election null and void on the grounds that she is yet to renounced or relinquish her foreign citizenship to US and Ethiopia.

Through his lawyer Ombati Omwanza, Hassan claims that the politician did not renounce the other citizenships and by taking the oath of office on August 31, 2017.

Leadership and Integrity Act states that a person who holds dual citizenship shall upon election not take office before officially renouncing their other citizenship in accordance with the provisions of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011.

He is seeking a declaration from the courts that the oath of office taken by the Jubilee politician after the August polls was unconstitutional, null and void.

Yahya also wants the Woman Representative to reimburse all the salaries and allowances she has drawn from public funds since she assumed office.
