Twelve people died on Saturday night after a bus collided head-on with a truck at Sogea along the Naivasha-Gilgil highway.

The driver of the bus is among those who perished in the grisly accident.

Six people were critically injured and are undergoing treatment at Nakuru Provincial General Hospital.

Five people with minor injuries were treated and discharged.

According to area
OCPD Emmanuel Opuru, the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided with the truck coming from the opposite direction.

The bus belonging to Climax Sacco was heading to Nairobi from Vihiga while the trailer was heading to Nakuru from Naivasha.

The police boss mentioned that they suspect the driver was overspeeding before the 2am incident occurred.

Climax Sacco buses have in the past been on the spot due to the recklessness of driver,.

The accident occurred hours after the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet was summoned to explain the circumstances surrounding the death of 507 Kenyans in accidents over the past two months.

The Transport, Public Works and Housing Committee of the National Assembly wants Boinett to appear and explain mitigation measures he has put in place to contain the rise in the number of lives lost in road crashes.
