KNUT Gives TSC 14 Days to Respond to Demands

The Kenya National Union of Teachers has given the Teachers Service Commission 14 days to respond to new demands.

The fall-out has raised fears of a strike with KCSE and KCPE examinations set to start at the end of the month.

A report compiled by a 10-man team drawn from TSC and KNUT, which was tabled at a retreat on the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for 2017-2021 in Naivasha, indicates that both teams fell out.

The Union wants the transfers of their key officials reversed. It accused the commission of planning to weaken the union through the relocation of its staff.

TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia stated that the commission is mandated to assign teachers employed in any public school or institution.

She explained, “Employees who hold elective offices in unions, saccos among others are primarily employed to teach and are bound by the code of regulations for teachers, which include provisions on transfers of teachers.”

Other demands are, the teachers want more than 30,000 of their counterparts promoted and an immediate stop to ongoing performance appraisals.

In a counter-accusation, TSC issued a statement blaming KNUT for giving fresh demands during their five-day retreat.

We have been shocked by TSC statement as it is full of lies and we are giving them 14 days to address our grievances or face the consequences,” responded Wilson Sossion the KNUT Secretary General.

He added, “By failing to promote teachers as enshrined in the code of regulations, the employer is denying teachers Sh6.6 billion annually. We shall not stop until our demands are addressed.”
