3 Reasons Why Ruto May Change Support on Referendum - Mutahi Ngunyi

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has given three grounds that may see Deputy President William Ruto change his support for the referendum.

Ruto had voiced that his support or opposition for the referendum will be dependent on the questions posed.

According to Mutahi, there are three compelling questions that may see the DP embrace Constitutional changes.

First, Mutahi opines that given that the country loses an estimated one trillion due to tension and economic slow down associated with the electoral cycle, Ruto may find it necessary for the country to adopt a parliamentary system of government.

Besides, the political analyst believes that the since the country's productivity one year before and after the election, Ruto may find it wrong for the country to continue experience this clampdown.

Lastly, the high number of people killed during election-related skirmishes also offers a compelling ground on why the country should move on a parliamentary system that would see less violence.

In his view, the amendment of the Constitution will reduce the cons of direct democracy which have nearly collapsed the country.

Mutahi indicated that by calling for a referendum, ODM leader Raila Odinga was keeping to the promise he made before the passage of the 2010 Constitution.

"During the last referendum, Raila told us we will make necessary amendments in the future," he stated.

He nevertheless criticized DP Ruto indicating that it was weird that the man who vehemently opposed the passage of the Constitution is turning down a chance to make it better.
