State Softens Stance on Seefar Apartments Demolition

The government in a letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke has softened its stance on the intended demolition of Seefar Apartments.

In the letter by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the state extended the grace period on the building's demolition from 15 days to a whole month.

NEMA, in their letter state, that the decision was reached "to allow consultation and investigations to guide the authority's decision."

In their communication to the property manager, it has emerged that the investor, who NEMA had on Friday accused of building on Nairobi Dam riparian reserve, requested for a joint inspection of his apartment.

NEMA had summoned the apartment owners to appear before the enforcement officers in the company of a legal advisor stating that the permanent structure encroached on the Nairobi dam reserves.

"As resolved in the meeting on Monday, October 15, 2018 meeting and your request for a joint inspection, NEMA will organize this (Joint inspection) and invite your representative as soon as possible.

"Please note the order still holds, but however, the notice is extended to thirty days to allow consultation and investigations to guide the authority's decision," reads the NEMA letter addressed to the property manager.

There are close to 1000 people who live at the apartment that was given a clean bill of health in 2015 with 287 homeowners.
