Nairobi Women Demand That Governor Mike Sonko Appoints Female Deputy

Women from different parts of Nairobi county on Tuesday held protests at the Central Business District demanding that Governor Mike Sonko appoints a female deputy.

The hundreds of women presented their grievances to the office of the Governor as well as that of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

Muthoni Chege, the head of the protest stated, “A house cannot be complete without a woman and Sonko’s house lacks one.”

She further added that they (protesters) did not have someone specific in mind but would be okay with the governor vetting and choosing the best, provided it is a woman.

The seat has been vacant since January when Polycarp Igathe resigned as Sonko's deputy.

In the past, the governor presented Miguna Miguna’s name for approval but the county assembly rejected him. Miguna also declined the offer.

Sonko later mentioned about having nominees suitable to fill up the position including lawyer Karen Nyamu, former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, Jane Weru and Agnes Kagure.

The governor shortlisted them in August but he is yet to settle on one or forward any name to the county assembly for approval.

The post became vacant after a fall out between Sonko and Igathe which led to his resignation.

Igathe was appointed as the Group Chief Commercial Officer of Equity Bank and later as the Managing Director.
