Uhuru, Ruto Ride Solar Powered Bicycle During Small Scale Business Blueprint Launch

A gathering of young entrepreneurs attending the small-scale business blueprint launch at the Strathmore University was excited by a cycling gig.

At the event, President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto made a stopover to try a modified bicycle dubbed "solar cycle".

The vehicle's innovators pride in the fact that the bike is able to harness solar energy during a cycling event in line with the global push for a shift embrace use of clean energy.

At the launch, Uhuru admited that the cost of electricity had shot up, directing Energy CS Charles Keter to undertake a review of electricity charges within the next month with the view of reducing the cost.

Uhuru in his submission at the conference also admitted that his government had failed to address the needs of small-scale traders.

He stated that it is odd that his government kept creating a favorable environment for "big investors"  while turning its back on SMEs despite their immense contribution to the economy.

"I must agree that it is a shame. You are the people who consume 75 per cent of our workforce," said the president.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was also in attendance, affirming his support for small and medium businesspeople in the city.

The Head of State appealed for more checks on goods imported from China so as to help promote local industries by curbing contraband products.

"We must be honest with ourselves, this meeting cannot just end here, we have heard and as a government in partnership with counties must sit and provide solutions on how and what way to help you because we owe it to you," he told the SME owners in attendance.
