Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji on Thursday revealed how Kenya's Ambassador to Russia Richard Ekai's bail application baffled him.
Speaking at the 2nd Centre for Corporate Governance (CCG) Alumni Network Summit, Haji indicated that he could not believe the grounds Ekai had cited for bail application.
"I was appalled that somebody I'm charging in court has the audacity to ask for bail so that he can go present his credentials in Russia," the DPP stated.
Ekai is among the individuals the DPP is pursuing alongside former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, now Kenya's ambassador to Austria, and former president of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) Kipchoge Keino.
They are accused of being behind the alleged embezzlement of Ksh55 million meant for the 2016 Rio Olympics games.
Haji further pointed out that failure by public and private sectors to provide moral guidance and ethical direction is a major hindrance to the country's social and political growth and development.
"Do we have a moral vision as a country," DPP Haji posed.
Making a presentation on inter-relations between corporate governance, ethical standards and public prosecutions during the CCG Summit, DPP noted that ethical leadership is a key pillar in corporate governance and should be mainstreamed in all sectors of society.
The DPP further challenged corporates not to be guided by profits only in their operations but to also consider public good of their customers.
"I've not prosecuted any corruption case within the public sector that does not have the hand of the private sector.
"Yet private sector is pointing fingers at government officials and making it seem as though they're the ones who're solely corrupt," he concluded.
