Police in Samburu County have launched a manhunt after five remandees escaped from custody at Wamba Police Station on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at night.
According to a police report shared on November 6, the dramatic escape happened at around 8:40 pm.
The report indicated that the incident began after one of the inmates shouted that a fellow had collapsed inside a cell that had five remandees.
Reportedly, when the police officer who was on duty at the report office heard the commotion, he rushed to the cell.
After opening the door to check what was happening, the prisoners suddenly pushed the door from inside, knocking him down. The remandees then overpowered the officers and fled in different directions.
The officer who was knocked sustained soft tissue injuries on the right side of the hand, head and knee the commotion.
Another officer who was returning his firearm to the armoury, heard the commotion and he fired two rounds from his AK-47 rifle in a bid to stop the escape.
The escapees were facing various charges, including illegal possession of ammunition and robbery with violence.
"We have deployed a multi-agency team to pursue the escapees. We urge members of the public to provide any information that may assist in their arrest,” the report stated in part.
The incident adds to a series of jailbreaks reported in various parts of the country in the recent past.
At Gigiri Police Station, 13 suspects, including alleged serial killers, escaped from the cells in August 2024.
Five police officers were later arraigned in court and were later released on a bond as investigations into their possible involvement continued
