Vietnamese Man Arrested At JKIA With Lion Teeth, Claws

A Vietnamese national was on Tuesday arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi having been found in possession of illegal wildlife products.

Truong Trung Hieu was nabbed with eight lion canine teeth, three lion claws and two warthog teeth.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Canine Unit identified the man and proceeded to take him into custody.

Hieu was on transit from Liberia on flight KQ 505 to Bangkok on KQ 886.

Due to growing demand for lion teeth and claws especially in China and Southeast Asia, lions in Kenya and Africa face increased killings and mutilation from poachers.

The teeth and claws are primarily used in making expensive pendants and amulets.

Wild lion populations have dropped by around 43 percent since 1993 to not more than 20,000 in 2014, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

In Kenya, the lion population stands at about 2,000 only down from 2,280 in 2004.

Kenya has in recent times made international commitments to target illegal traffickers of wildlife products at points of entry and exit.

KWS Communications Officer Paul Udoto stated at a recent event that Kenya was losing an average of 100 lions yearly due to poaching, human and wildlife conflict, poisoning of carcasses and loss of prey.
