Kenya Police Introduces New Department for Psychosocial Wellness of Officers

The National Police Service on Wednesday revealed that it is introducing a new department to cater for the welfare of the security agents.

In a tweet, the commission stated that the new department will be called National Police Service Counseling and Rehabilitation Centre.

“The Commission has established the National Police Service Counselling and Rehabilitation Center to assist the service in addressing psychosocial stress-related problems affecting the officers,” read the advert in a daily.

This revelation was contained in a notice advertising 13 positions, 12 of which were for the new department while the other was for a Director of Corporate Services at the commission.

The other advertised jobs for the department include Director of Counselling Services and his deputy, Manager Counselling Service, Senior Counsellor and other counsellors (5 positions).

The commission further stated that the recruitment of the candidates would enable operationalisation of the new centre.

The job description identified the counsellors’ role as to identify the psychological and stress-related problems of clients, conduct client counselling sessions and keeping records and follow-ups of the officers.

It has been reported that psychological problems have in the past adversely affected police officers leading to suicides.

A study had earlier identified mental illness caused by the nature of the job (handling crime scenes) depression and drug abuse as the major cause of the surge in military suicides.

The vacancies are open until November 5 and applicants should hand deliver the applications to the National Police Service Commission headquarters.
