KRA Issues 15-day Warning to Taxpayers

KRA issued a 15-day notice to taxpayers who defaulted in filing tax returns and asked them to settle the outstanding penalties.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the customer care at the tax authority's centre stated that the defaulters are expected to clear the penalties 15 days from the date issued.

Failure to clear the debt will result in aggravated penalties and interests on amounts due.

"Please make payment within 15 days, failure to which the amounts will attract collection enforcement measures," read the email sent to tax payers.

The tax authority firm recently set up a system that tracks a tax payers outstanding balance where the information is later given to an officer charged with the responsibility of recovering the money.

"Roll-out of this module led to the generation of default notices for all outstanding debt in taxpayers’ ledgers for periods 2015 to date," stated KRA as reported by Business Daily.

The system has, however, faced challenges after complaints emerged that certain taxpayers were being targeted even after they had filed their returns.

KRA, however, clarified the matter and explained that the notices are system generated and those who required further clarification should contact its centres.

According to the law, anyone with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) is required to file returns annually.

The same applies to those people with a nil return.

The taxman has resulted to using the filing of tax returns as a way to easily identifying tax cheaters.
