DCI Nab Heroin Hidden in Makeup Kits at JKIA

Millions worth of narcotics hidden in makeup kits were confiscated awaiting transit at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Confirming the incident, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated that the drugs heroin and methamphetamine were concealed in cartons containing the beauty products.

The goods were allegedly destined for New Zealand and China before the bust was made.

DCI stated that investigations were already underway to nab those involved.

A recent report released by National Agency for the Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA), showed that 4.9 Million Kenyans between the ages of aged 15 – 65 years were abusing at least one drug.

Among the regions that showed most prevalences were Eastern, Nairobi, Coast and Western recording increasing trends of alcohol and drug abuse.

"Alcohol use has been associated with the highest burden of substance use disorders (SUDs)," the report stated.

Both drugs are highly addictive with heroin, also known as diamorphine being an opioid most commonly used as a recreational drug for its euphoric effects.

Heroin often contains additives, such as sugar, starch, or powdered milk, that can clog blood vessels leading to the lungs, liver, kidneys, or brain, causing permanent damage.

According to medical studies, sharing drug injection equipment and having impaired judgment from drug use can increase the risk of contracting infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis.

Methamphetamine commonly referred to as meth is an illegal drug in the same class as cocaine and other powerful street drugs.

Users take by snorting it (inhaling through the nose), smoking it or injecting it with a needle.

Some even take it orally, but all develop a strong desire to continue using it because the drug creates a false sense of happiness and well-being—a rush (strong feeling) of confidence, hyperactiveness and energy.
