Uhuru Endorses Wangari Maathai's Book 'The Challenge for Africa'

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday endorsed a book by the late Wangari Maathai during the ongoing Peace forum in France.

In a statement by Statehouse, the president endorsed the book 'The Challenge for Africa' by the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

The book highlighted the environmental, social and economic challenges facing Africa.

Through the book, the deceased environmentalist activist, pointed out that African countries had fallen short of genuine democracy.

Maathai further highlighted that the problems the people faced was due to lack of accountability and transparency by the African leaders.

"It is in no one’s interest to have governments threatened by guns, or coups, or civil wars.

"They should be threatened by votes, cast in free and fair elections, " stated Maathai.

The founder of the Green Belt Movement, encouraged people especially leaders, to re-embrace their African heritage and a sense of community.

The professor explained that such a common ground would strengthen the identity as a nation and continent which would be passed on to future generations.

Other than The Challenge for Africa, Maathai authored three other books: The Green Belt Movement; Unbowed: A Memoir and Replenishing the Earth.

In the book Maathai remarked that irrespective of the colonial struggle, change was always necessary.
