National exam invigilators are smiling to the bank after sharing a hefty pay of close to Kshs1 Billion in allowances.
The 264,446 field officers, who include centre managers, supervisors, invigilators, security agents and drivers were managing and overseeing the national exams.
Those monitoring the exams in areas such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Malindi, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and Naivasha are entitled to daily allowances between Kshs 6, 300 and Kshs 18,200.
Those in Nyeri, Eldoret, Kericho, Kakamega, Kisii, Embu, Nanyuki, Nakuru, Lodwar and Garissa are earning between Kshs 4,900 and Kshs 12,600.
Officers in all other towns are getting between Kshs 4,200 and Kshs 10,500.
Those going outside Nairobi are entitled to air transport since they are required to be in examination centres as early as 6 am.
More than 1,000 special monitors from various ministries and government departments involved in the process are also paid daily allowances.
They are drawing the allowances from their respective departments, which will run into millions of shillings.
Sub-county commissioners, divisional police bosses, Teachers Service Commission county and sub-county officers, regional education coordinators, county and sub-county directors of education are also benefitting from the process.
The government set aside Kshs4.2 Billion for the national exams with Kshs1 Billion used to pay field officers.
Kshs2 Billion is for teachers who will mark the scripts while rest of the cash caters for logistic.
