Former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama has revealed why she hated her first trip to Kenya in her new book titled Becoming.

She wrote that in 1992 when her husband, President Barack Obama, brought her to the country, the tour was frustrating from the onset, therefore making the rest of it a nightmare.

She experienced her disappointment right from the airport as Barack’s sister, Auma Obama, had quite a dilapidated car.

Auma’s sky-blue VW was so old that it often needed to be pushed in order to get the engine into gear,” she explained.

She had bought new white sneakers to wear on the trip, and within a day, after all the pushing they did, her shoes turned reddish brown, stained with the cinnamon-hued dust of Nairobi.

She added, “For every bit of awe we felt in Kenya, we were also tired, which led to quibbling, which led finally, for whatever reason, to rage.

I’m so angry at Barack,” she wrote in her journal. “I don’t think we have anything in common," she continued. "As a measure of my frustration, I drew a long emphatic gash across the rest of the page,” the memoir went on.

The awful experience could be the reason why she did not accompany Obama in his previous visits to Kenya in 2006 as the Senator of Illinois and 2015 as the President of the US.

She also skipped his most recent visit when he came to open his sister Auma’s the Sauti Kuu Foundation in July.

It was not all gloom as she went on to reveal that she enjoyed the company of Obama’s relatives who turned out to be her in-laws.
