Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Friday issued a six-month deadline to all owners of unclaimed vehicles held in police stations.
Speaking at the Intercontinental Hotel during the orientation of new IPOA Board members, Matiang'i stated that there were plans for Administrative Forfeiture whereby the IG will publish an advertisement informing owners of unclaimed vehicles and motorcycles held in police stations of the impending transfer of ownership to the government.
The vehicles, whose owners will not have come forward, will be repurposed to be used for service delivery to Kenyans in the campaign to clean up police stations.
"This is especially for vehicles that were caught ferrying contraband material," he explained giving a timeline of six months until the cleanup exercise is completed.
He added that the Government would continue collaborating with different security apparatus and civil society organisations across the country to enhance service delivery to Kenyans.
“We have to work together; no individual or organization can work alone. And where there is collaboration, let it continue,” Matiang’i stated.
The Cabinet Secretary also reiterated that everything is on course in the implementation of the new police reforms and command structure envisioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He added that he was interested in the number of cases reported to the recently launched Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) as well as the progress in investigating and resolving them.
According to the CS, publishing such data is what will demonstrate the Government’s credibility in ensuring efficient service delivery to Kenyans.
Dr. Matiang’i also announced the disbandment of the Firearms and Licensing Board citing corruption, incompetence and misbehaviour that have been ailing the previous board. He added that his Ministry was in the process of reconstituting a new team in the soonest time possible.
“We have been working quietly in the last few months to create a digital record of all those who hold genuine and legit firearms certificates. The exercise is almost complete. We shall be issuing new certificates soon. Anyone not holding the new certificate will be deemed to be holding an illegal firearm,” he noted.
