The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji revealed how he intends to reveal the politicians, judges, businessmen and a lawyer who was named in the drug case involving Ibrahim Akasha and Bakhtash Akasha.
Haji told the Daily Nation that he knew the identities of the individuals and that his office would co-operate fully with the United States’ efforts to prosecute them.
He stated that “We are privy to the investigations. We know the individuals but we have to wait for the request from the US before naming anyone.”
He is awaiting an official request from the United States government regarding those incriminated in the scandal.
The request will determine the next action the DPP’s office will take and whether the named individuals will be tried in the US or locally.
He explained that the incriminated persons will not be secretly bundled out of the country and sent to the United States to stand trial as was done with the controversial siblings.
“The reason extraordinary measures were taken with the Akashas was the constant frustration. But at this point, the Kenyan government will co-operate. We will try our best to ensure the law is followed,” Haji commented.
A Cabinet Secretary, a Governor, a top lawyer, a prosecutor, a senior detective, two judges, and two magistrates are among scores of prominent Kenyans that the US Department of Justice is investigating over allegations of taking bribes from the Akashas.
The siblings pleaded guilty to seven criminal charges, including trafficking in heroin and methamphetamine, popularly known as meth.
They also confessed to bribing police and judges to stall their planned extradition to the US.
