Former AG Githu Muigai's Next Job

Immediate former Attorney General, Prof Githu Muigai, has stated that he is training his eyes on academia and wants to get back to his lecturing job at the University of Nairobi.

Githu, who is also a Senior Lecturer of Public Law at the University of Nairobi, had been on leave of absence in order to serve as the AG.

Githu spoke to The Standard on the circumstances surrounding his resignation which happened earlier in the year where he maintained that he left in good faith.

Despite maintaining that he faced the challenges of limited resources, he divulged that he did not regret his time at the helm of power, noting that President Uhuru Kenyatta supported his decision to quit.

Githu's surprising resignation was announced by President Kenyatta, on Tuesday, February 13.

He assumed office on August 27, 2011, one year after the inauguration of the new constitution through an appointment by former President Mwai Kibaki.

He explained that his inspiration to serve as a lawyer was influenced by Kenya’s first lawyers in the 1960s.

Among them was University of Bombay educated Lawyer, Silvano Melea Otieno – who was popularly known as SM Otieno.

According to him, the hallmark at the AG was to transition the country from the old Constitution to new one.

Regarding the ICC, he commented that the cases presented an existential threat to the Republic of Kenya and its future.

“I felt then as I do now that had Kenya as a sovereign state not taken the position that we took, we would

have exposed our country and its future to very serious peril,” he mentioned during the interview.

Githu also serves as a Managing Partner in the Kenyan law firm of Mohammed Muigai Advocates, where

he specializes in commercial litigation and arbitration as well as constitutional and administrative law.
