2 Killed, 13 Injured After Matatu Collides With Lorry

Two people were killed and 13 others were injured after a 14-seater matatu collided with a lorry.

The grisly accident occurred on Sunday morning at Mau Summit area on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

It happened as the driver of the matatu was trying to make a u-turn on the road when the vehicle was hit by the lorry from behind.

The lorry driver fled the scene on foot.

Kuresoi North Deputy County Commissioner Felix Wafula noted that a hunt was underway for the driver

The injured were rushed to Nakuru County Referral Hospital and Eldama Ravine District Hospital in Baringo County.

According to the 2018 Global Status Report on Road Safety, released by the World Health Organization on Friday the number deaths related to traffic accidents has gone up.

Traffic accidents also moved up to the eighth leading cause of death for people of all ages, ahead of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

Traffic deaths are now the leading global cause of deaths for children and young adults between 5 and 29 years old.

“More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists,” the report read in part.
