Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has taken action after police gunned down a university student in Kibera.
He directed Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to hasten investigations into the fatal shooting of Leeds University student Carilton David Maina.
The deceased was on long holiday and had returned to the country to visit his family.
He was shot dead on Saturday morning after allegations that he was among the youth terrorizing locals.
Kilimani police boss Michael Muchiri indicated that the police recovered a homemade gun and a knife at the scene of crime.
“The police received a call from the members of the public who said that they were being mugged by a group of youths. It is then that the police acted and shot one on the spot,” Muchiri mentioned.
In tweet posted Wednesday IG Boinnet further assured the public that action will be taken depending on the outcome of the probe.
“We wish to inform the public that the Inspector General of Police has asked IPOA to expedite investigations into the shooting incident that occurred in Kibera within Nairobi County in which one Carlton Maina was shot and fatally injured.”
“We further wish to assure the public that the service, just like in similar instances in the past, will enforce the outcome of the investigations that IPOA will recommend,” the tweet sent by National Police Service read.
He earned a scholarship at the UK college soon after clearing his high school education at the Maseno School in 2013.
