Ex-Speakers, Chief Justices, Deputies to Get Kshs1 Million Monthly

All former Speakers of Parliament, Chief Justices and Deputy Chief Justices will henceforth be entitled to a monthly pension of Kshs1 Million.

This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta's signed the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2018 into law.

The ex-government officials will also get fully equipped offices at taxpayers' expense.

The new law will require Treasury to allocate funds for leasing offices and buying equipment like computers, seats and TV sets.

The former government staff will also get personal assistants, secretaries, housekeepers, gardeners and cleaners.

The perks, however, will only be available for those who served after 1993.

Beneficiaries of the plan include former speakers Ekwee Ethuro, Kenneth Marende, and Francis ole Kaparo.

Others are retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and his deputy Kalpana Rawal

Kenya has had six retired chief justices since 1993.

Apart from Dr Mutunga (2011-2016), two of them, Bernard Chunga (1999-2003) and Evan Gicheru (2003-2011) are also alive.
