Inspector of General of Police Joseph Boinnet has been ordered to pay Kshs3.7 million to an AP officer for wrongful sacking.
Boinnet was, alongside his deputy and the Attorney General (AG), directed to settle the amount for dismissing Kennedy Odhiambo Owino.
Owino was reportedly fired after he 'failed to appear before orderly room proceedings' while he was undergoing cadet’s course at Administration Police Training College.
In her ruling, Labour Relations Court Judge Hellen Wasilwa ordered IG to pay Owino all his salary and benefits since his illegal dismissal in 2014.
Wasilwa further faulted National Police Service Commission (NPSC) for illegally and unconstitutionally terminating the officer’s service.
She further ruled that the NPSC had disregarded Owino’s appeal who was accused of reporting for range, field craft and technical exercise at Kedong Field Training Camp.
Owino had argued in court that his termination and failure to be reinstated after his appeal succeeded was a violation of his constitutional rights.
He pursued legal action demanding to be awarded damages for inconveniences he suffered.
The officer was sacked in September 2014, just four days before his graduation after a four-month promotion course.
This comes weeks after the former National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) director Mathew Munyao had been awarded Kshs7.3 million in a lawsuit against the state.
