Kenyans May Have Received False HIV Results – Study

Medics are, once again, on the spot after they were accused of possibly issuing Kenyans with fake HIV/AIDS results.

According to an audit by the Attorney General of Global Fund, a quarter of health workers were not following the set standards during HIV testing.

About 24 per cent of the 21 facilities visited do not consistently follow the national standardised HIV testing procedures or algorithms,” revealed the audit report.

It further discovered that the medics carrying out the tests were not being supervised and had not undergone a refresher course, which is an annual requirement.

The report further disclosed that condoms worth Kshs600 million commissioned by Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) were not tested.

The auditors also discovered that KEMSA had improperly stored medicines worth Kshs380 million in leaking warehouseS in Industrial area.

At the time of the audit, Global Fund commodities worth ($3.8 million) Sh380 million were stored in these sub-optimal conditions,” documented the auditors.

Global Fund has, thus, threatened to cut its funding to Kenya.

In 2016, the fund had allocated KEMSA Kshs190 million for a new warehouse whose construction had not yet commenced by 2018.

Kenya thus risks losing funds in line with Global Fund guidelines,” warned Global Fund.

Kenya Red Cross has also come under fire from the report after it allegedly spent Kshs47 million to procure defective needles and syringes.
