The heroic GSU officer, whose photos while saving lives during the 14 Riverside Drive attack broke the internet both locally and globally, on Tuesday night spoke on his experience of the whole incident.
During an interview on NTV, Ali Kombo, a Police Constable with the GSU, remarked that during the attack, his work was the main motivating factor to save as many lives as possible, as his job mandates him to.
“Before I signed up for GSU, I knew I was putting my life on the line to save the lives of other Kenyans," Kombo stated.
He revealed that before getting to the scene of the attack, his unit did not have an idea on what they had been called to respond to, as the GSU responds to any emergency calls.
“We are always stationed at the camp, so if anything happens at any time, either day or night, we have to respond to any emergency call. We got the orders to evacuate and save lives on arrival,” the constable disclosed.
He also revealed that to execute the orders, he had to assure the people he rescued that they were safe because for the attackers to get to them, they had to get through him.
“This is what we do, this is what we are trained to do, to protect and save lives,” Kombo added.
He also made it clear that all credit shouldn't fall on him alone, thanking his GSU unit and all other security forces for the successful evacuation of the lives they managed to save.
“This is not about me, This is not about Ali Kombo, it is about all of our security forces and about the Kenyans who were there," he stated.
Kombo revealed that his biggest highlight of the Riverside attack was how all Kenyans, from the security units to journalists and even volunteers, came together showing a united front against the attackers.
The heroic officer also disclosed that he had no idea of how many lives he saved during the incident.
